Kwakiutl BEAR DANCE PADDLE by Laurence Scow from the Kwakiulth First Nation on Vancouver Island, BC, Pacific's Northwest Coast. 

Have a look at the incredibly detailed carving. This really is fantastic quality! Precise carving lines, lots of them... powerful painting in vibrant choice of color. Laurence used an absolutely beautiful piece of red cedar.

These dance paddles are usually used in ceremonies. I'm enclosing an example picture that shows you, how they are used.

At the back of the paddle it shows the artist’s signature. It's easy recognizable as one of Laurence's pieces of art carvings, he always puts some extra love into it, you can clearly see it.

Measurements: 37" x 4" x 1/2" 

Meaning: The Bear is a symbol for power, courage, physical strength and leadership. Warriors e.g. are known to wear bear claw necklaces which meant protection. In Haida culture the Bear is referred to as "Elder Kinsman" and was treated like a high-ranking guest.
